Presenters:

Kate McSwain trained as an elite figure skater for over 15 years, at the Detroit Skating Club and more recently, the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs. She holds a Theatre degree from the University of Colorado and has extensive training in dance, pilates, and yoga. Kate is an American Ice Theatre certified choreographer, and has had the opportunity to train with Jodi Porter in choreography techniques. With this education, Kate is experienced and knowledgeable in performance concepts such as stage presence, body awareness, emotional expression, and artistic presentation. Kate has choreographed for the 2014 National Champion Theatre on Ice team, Act 1 of Boston, as well as elite singles skaters such as Rachael Flatt, Jeremy Abbott, and Adam Rippon. She has worked with American Ice Theatre, Ice Theatre of New York, and Chicago’s Ice-Semble in their professional productions and has directed seminars for top coaches and competitors across the nation. Currently, Kate teaches in Boston and travels to direct artistic seminars, choreograph for competitive skaters and TOI teams, and perform in professional ice show productions.

John Mucko has been a featured skater with Ice Follies International and International Holiday on Ice.   He is a PSA Master Rated Choreographer and holds a Registered Rating in Free Skate.   John has created many Ice Shows and Theatrical programs throughout his  career.  Bringing performance, movement and emotion to the ice is his goal for every skater.  John has developed several on and off-ice clinics working to develop awareness to the importance of core development in movements on the ice.   Power of Performance is designed to help the skater realize the importance of using time, space, and energy and to enhance every moment of performing.

 Meet the Presenters – AIT Summer Intensive

  • Jodi Porter is PSA Master rated in choreography and holds a BFA degree in Modern Dance from a nationally recognized program at the University of Utah that gave her extensive technical experience in dance choreography, performance, and teaching. Ms. Porter’s dance background includes master classes and training with the Paul Taylor School, Alvin Ailey dancers, Trisha Brown Company, Sean Curran, and Murray Louis. She has danced professionally with Shipp Dance Theatre, and appeared as a guest artist with Repertory Dance Theatre. From 2002-2007 she has held a full-time position at Ballet San Jose as the Associate School Director, managing a program of over 450 students. She has choreographed successful dance projects with the school including a 1st Prize trophy for the piece ‘Sunset Tango’ at the International Grand Prix in Cesena, Italy 2005. Other dance credits include directing the Spy Girls, dancers for the San Jose Stealth Professional Lacrosse Team, and choreographing for the musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Ms. Porter served on the Performing Arts Committee for the city of Mountain View from Jan. 2007 – Jan. 2010.

    In figure skating Ms. Porter is a USFS freestyle gold medalist. After competing from 1980-1990 she traveled in numerous international ice shows with Disney on Ice and other production companies performing roles including: chorus, principal pair, principal soloist, and performance director until 1997. From that point her passion for choreography in dance/skating spurred her to direct and choreograph several of her own projects including: SLC Children’s Theatre on Ice 1997, Grizz Girlzz Hockey Cheerleaders 1999, SLC Contemporary Ice Theatre 2000, and Jodi Porter¹s Urban Ice Project 2002.

    In 2002 Ms. Porter was an Assistant Cast Coordinator and performed in the XIX Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies as well as choreographed the opening for the figure skating Exhibition of Champions. She is currently Founder of American Ice Theatre (AIT), a non-profit performance company that fuses dance with figure skating. AIT has been supported by the Silicon Valley Arts Council since 2004. AIT has performed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area including intermissions for the SJ Sharks Hockey Team, Downtown Ice San Jose, Walnut Creek, Union Square San Francisco and creating full-length productions in San Jose 2004 and 2008.

    AIT has expanded operations to Utah in 2013 and is premiered a full length production in Chicago 2014.

  • Felicia Beck – As the 2002 U.S. National Junior Ladies Bronze Medalist, 2002 ISU Junior Grand Prix Bronze Medalist, 2002 Regional and Sectional Champion, 2003-2005 U.S. National Senior Ladies Competitor, and representing US Figure Skating’s Team USA at various International competitions, Felicia is dedicated to excellence in the sport of Figure Skating. As a three-time recipient of the U.S. Figure Skating Chevy Scholastic Honors Team Scholarship Award, Felicia is a cum laude graduate of The University of California, Riverside holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.Felicia is a Double Gold Medalist in Free Skating and Moves in the Field, Sectional Technical Specialist, and served on the USFS Athlete Advisory Committee. She was the Director of Figure Skating at Ice Town in Riverside, California from 2007-2013 and has achieved her Registered rating through the Professional Skaters Association in Freestyle and Choreography. She is currently studying AIT certifications. Ms. Beck also participated in the Young Artists Showcase Competition and she currently shares her love of dynamic artistry and unique choreography as a Coach and Choreographer in Southern California.
  •  Lorna Brown is British and  World Professional Champion and a World and Olympic coach. Former National Coach of Denmark. Coached and choreographed for at least 50 International Champions and Medalists including 2 World Professional Champions.
    Choreographing most recently for Emanuel Sandhu,a former 3 times Canadian Champion and for Kevin Van Der Perren, Belgium Champion, 2 times European Bronze medalist and top 10 in Worlds and Olympics and 2011 Silver medalist in Bratislava and 2011 Skate America (he won the free!). Also Choreographed for Jenna McCorkell 10 times British Champion.
    Choreographed for Michelle Hanabusa, the 5 times National Showcase Winner of the USA.
    10349214_10152317012613947_6026833586843606731_nLorna was principal performer in numerous ice shows all over the world including “John Curry’s Ice Dancing” on Broadway NY, and “Theatre of Skating” at the London Palladium. She has appeared in TV specials, touring Galas and commercials world wide. She has studied contemporary dance and worked with some of the Worlds leading choreographers, including, Jean-Pierre Bonnfous, Kenneth MacMillan and Peter Martins to name a few. Lorna has given workshops and talks on all aspects of figure skating, at “National and International seminars” for both skaters and coaches. She has  produced and directed her own International Skating School in the UK called “Skate of the Art” with the world famous Rafael Arituniun and Dance Choreographers including Mimi Chakonoist.(Assitant Choreographer to Bob Fossi).

    She specializes in the latest physics and aero dynamics in skating techniques, and she focuses a great deal on expression,musical interpretation and style in her choreography and has written several articles for skating magazines on these subjects.

  • Savannah Reach  is an Undergraduate Scholar pursuing her Masters in Organic Chemistry at the University of Alabama. She graduated summa cum laude as a Distinguished Undergraduate Scholar through the Honors College in Dance, Chemistry, and Computing Technology and Applications. Recently, she performed in New York City as a Guest Artist at the Broadway Dance Center Showcase, 125th Capezio Anniversary Gala and the Capezio ACE Awards.  She also won Youth American Grand Prix Top Three Soloist and NUVO National Overall Senior. She has danced professionally with SoulEscape directed by Justin Giles. She travels throughout the United States working for NUVO, JUMP, and Adrenaline Dance Conventions where she assists professional choreographers and teachers, such as Stacey Tookey and Travis Wall.  At the age of fifteen, she was honored as the only Alabama dancer and one of eight dancers from the United States to attend the Royal Ballet Summer Intensive in London, England. Her choreography, The Light Will Come, was selected as the overall winner in Panoply’s 30th Choreography Competition.  She gives back by teaching dance through the Boys and Girls Club.  Savannah will start her MFA Degree in Dance Medicine and Science at the University of California Irvine this fall with a fellowship and teaching assistantship.
